Boats, bikes, and delicious bullsharks

I've been (re)exploring some other sports as of late. This weekend, from the scorekeeper's pontoon barge, I got to watch the ACAT and NACRA class catamaran races in bullshark infested Boca Ciega Bay in sunny Gulfport, FL. After the races, one of the sailors let me check out first-hand how fast these ACAT boats go. ACAT's are 165 lb. sailboats that are probably closer to a windsurfer than a larger sailboat with respect to how twitchy they are with the controls. Here is some video of a moving ACAT.

This race was important, since the Ronstan ACAT Worlds are in Islamorada next weekend, and there was much positioning between the competitors.

A couple weeks ago, I took out a 16' Hobie cat in these same shark-infested waters. Sonia took a 2 day sailboat intro class this weekend, so she'll be up to sailing speed soon as well. By the way, I'd actually like to give shark meat another shot. I have not had an opportunity to taste the local bullsharks, but they must be delicious, since bulls are often delicious. I would probably try to make bullshark ceviche. Also wanted to go wakeboarding that same day, but the wind didn't die down in time for the boat to go home, so maybe next weekend. I want to experiment with a more fin-free setup, as advised by an expert.

Also have been doing some bicycling around the neighborhood, and planning some forest and trail trips, now that the weather is nice and cool. Some old rail tracks in St. Petersburg were torn out to connect the Pinellas County trail to the downtown via Tropicana Field. I plan on attempting the unfinished trail with my mountain bike this week. I have some "Town and Country" tires which should be up to the task.

This thing is a great boat. It has a cut-out back for when a wave gets over the bow, and a 680 lb. keel which makes is virtually unflippable, though it makes it hard to stop and accelerate. Also slows down its top end significantly. But a nicely crafted, good looking, safe comfortable boat. Here's a pic:

Palm is by far the PDA best supported on Linux. That's why I use it, versus something retarded like an overpriced iPhone. Linux + Treo 680 > iPhone + OSX, especially in light of http://tinyurl.com/39dlln . It was all very easy, except one gotcha made my life difficult...

Moving everything from the 650 was a snap with the Linux pilot-xfer utility, except for the dial-up networking (DUN). I thought getting the DUN working would be a snap, but I neglected to change the "channel" in rfcomm.com. This made my modem not talk back to any chatscript commands. To find the right channel, run the Unix command "sdptool browse" and look for the channel of the Dial-up Networking entry. It used to be 1 and now it's 2. Thanks Khaytsus at #palm@irc.freenode.net!!!

By the way, here is my working set of chatscripts: http://palm.uname.nl/index.php/Treo680ATTChat

Update: I quit using these chatscripts and use gnome-ppp instead which seems to figure things out on its own when supplied the standard parameters. More recently, I even stopped using the gnome-ppp front end and just use the gnome-network-manager applet that runs in the beagle search window and also accessible via netapplet.

Hope this helps someone. -Eric

That said, all has been well. I fondled an i-Phone, which I wanted to dislike, but ended up liking (aside from the outrageous price). Nice clean design and interface. Nowhere near as gimmicky as the crappy OSX interface. But, definitely not worth the money. Cingular told me the unlimited data plan is actually a slower one than their regular unlimited. I stuck with the familiar and got a Treo 680 for $50 w/ plan /rebate which is slimmer and smaller than my 650, but about the same thing. Hopefully, it has the IMAP folder bugs fixed in Versamail. Me loves the IMAP email.

So, reading the news, I encountered the expose on Bush's pardon of Scooter. Apparently, he was cajoled into it by the Cheney Squad of Darkness for two possible reasons: cronyism or perhaps fear of an Abramoff-style Scooter revenge brain dump. Doesn't matter which (or both possibly). What does matter is it reinforced the concept that Bush, though a four hit die fool, is actually an honorable man, and that Cheney is the root of most of the Administration's miasma.

On my tally of Bush Administration misdirection, I put Faith-based initiatives and the Saddam revenge on Bush's account; and the domestic wiretaps, Plame incident, Iraq War, Haliburton patronage, Kyoto Protocol nonratification, etc., etc., on Cheney's.

If only there were enough Willy Nelson to counteract the Cheney in the world.

Speaking of improving the world, I've decided to only buy music off a musical group's website. That way, the group, which has control over its Internet domain, can bypass the need for marketing via a large record label, and keep all the money for themselves. Channels like i-Tunes still promote the bigger labels and pressure the bands to contract with them. However, with all the social netwroking going on, bands no longer need the labels. So just buy the music directly in whatever format the band has available on their website, and eliminate the RIAA.

-Eric

6-23-2007 Wisconsin Road Trip!!!!!

The sordid details...

Mostly, I've been continuing to build my data integration consulting business, Alexandria Consulting, LLC. This has involved many trips this Spring and early Summer. An Ultimate Frisbee tourney in Destin, FL, and a road trip to Wisconsin with Sonia and Melvin, my dog, have also rounded out my recent activities. For career/business reasons, I've been working hard to understand the underlying object-oriented framework of the Python programming language, especially Descriptors, which are the foundation of its object-oriented structure. Also, piddling around learning C, which is a whole different ball of wax.

The Wisconsin trip involved helping my parents out with a million projects at their cottages and at their home in West Bend, and attending a cousin's wedding in Tomah, WI. I can't really say, overall, that it was a fun trip, because there were a lot of ongoing family disputes/decisions in which I unwillingly had to get involved, and my parents were constantly trying to find large chores for me to perform. No wakeboarding was to be had (which reminds me of the snowboard-less Portland OR, trip I had in January/Feb this year) and Melvin tipped our canoe over in a storm forcing Sonia and I to swim. Melvin killed a raccoon and almost caught a fawn, had I not shouted at him, momentarily distracting him.

As always, Wisconsin never fails to remind me why I left. I almost kissed the ground in Florida once I reached Gainesville.

I'm sort of disturbed by the upcoming presidential election. On the Democrat side, I like Paul Dodd and Barak. Nice lads. On the Republican side, I like Ron Paul, essentially a Jeffersonian Republican against our big government's constant foreign meddling. I am saddened to think I have waited through 8 long years of George W. Bush only to arrive at having Hillary as the main Democratic challenger.

We had to cut an octagonal hole for the tree first, and it has power lines above, to be buried within the next decade, so it had to be a species that couldn't grow too large. I've already seen many bees hovering over its red flower-like brushes (I have been informed they are not caskins, so not sure what they are).
Can we sustain something like the Dunedin Brewery in our neck of the woods, err beach?

Last night I had a conversation with yet another person who'd like to start a brewpub in St. Petersburg. Let's look at the pros and cons of undertaking such an endeavor. Feel free to send me your additions.

Pros

Cons

A rapidly growing young, professional population desirous of craft beers. Visit the bar named The Independent if you wish to witness this demographic.

St. Petersburg water has a bad taste, as it partially comes from an aquifer and isn't mountain runoff as in other brewpub-populous areas.

There is abundant retail space. Lots of decrepit unused storefronts near Central.

Water is expensive in St. Petersburg. I don't know how much of a relative cost factor this would be.

Competition from the excellent Dunedin Brewpub 30 minutes to the North

The general population of St. Petersburg, including tourists tend to prefer poor quality near beers like Budweiser.

If you think the pros outweigh the cons, where should it ideally be located? My suggestion is somewhere near Central Ave, no further West than 31st. Street and no closer in than 9th Street.

3-10-2008 Pygmy Horriblis

We bought a massive pygmy date palm for a price we couldn't refuse. But the full price had not yet been paid.

We still had to install it. When something is this big, it's not really "planting". Initially, I really didn't want to have anything to do with bringing it home. I was more than happy paying whatever it cost to have people with big machines haul it to our home and drop it in the ground. This probably would have ended up costing more than the palm itself, which was from Home Depot, cheap, and on sale at that. So we decided to attempt a manual self-installation.

"My foot, my foot, foot, foot, foot. Still my foot."

Loading the palm onto the truck (manual shifting which mostly came right back to me after a 10 year space off time) was a breeze gracias al forklift. The fun ended there.

So, Sonia got some neighbors/friends together, and the four of us started sliding the the pallet off the truck, with the palm on top. The weight quickly overwhelmed us, as I half expected and the palm started sliding off the pallet, almost crushing my neighbor from across the street Mark's foot.

I heard him say. "My foot, my foot, foot, foot, foot. Still my foot." So we pulled the pallet away from his foot, which resulted in numerous thorn cuts on our arms and even Brian's, another neighbor's, ear and the top of his head. In fact, my ear was impaled by the sharp thorns as well, a fact I noticed the next day. Sonia devilishly snickered at our cartoon-like ouches.

Ed, a friend who lives a couple miles away looked like a character from the movie Stigmata

, as his wrist and work-gloved hands were impaled so many times he had to go wash up. The needles effortlessly puncture standard work gloves.

Finally, after much labor, we rolled the palm into the pre-dug hole and finished the installation. For $100, we could have paid someone to do it. They probably would have been eviscerated as well, but that would be their occupational hazard and choice. Also, they might actually employ some modern simple machines, or even a Bobcat.

Though Windows is a horrible OS, at least Microsoft doesn't lock you down completely to their own hardware. How would a hardware and software monopoly be an improvement over solely a software monopoly?

The OSX desktop is ridiculously over-thought. I much prefer the Gnome and KDE desktops for Linux for their straightforward simplicity.

Steve Jobs is more smug than anyone from Portland, Oregon, and that's saying a lot.

Mac users. They tend to be very annoying, and minion-like, paying ridiculous amounts for whatever Apple belches out that month.

Apple thinks they are a media company now. I think it a bad idea coupling software + hardware + media licensing all under one company. It creates a tightly coupled platform non-neutral mess.

Apple ads are horrible.

Bono apprears on an Apple ads. Bono appears to be a turd in elemental form.

Feist appears on an Apple ad. Feist is talentless. This is not to say Bono has talent.

An the most Zen-like: Apple only has meaning in relation to the crappiness of Microsoft, no innate meaning.

I shall now proceed to distribute "iFrigginStronglyDislikeApple" bumper stickers.

Mr. Jobs, I additionally invite you to enjoy life, and wear a summer weight shirt with a retro multi-colored Apple logo. The multi-colored logo was a happy logo, unlike the ominous newer grey one vying for NYC's namesake.

And, as always, whenever I learn about something new, I immediately am immersed in the new reality to which I have been enlightened. So now, I see lemon grass everywhere. In stores, in people's yards: most everywhere. So now I need to see if it works. I can't really smell any lemonyness from the leaves, but when I break off a leaf, it wafts of lemon pungeance. I'll try cooking with it, and I hope it's not too thirsty a plant. I'll likely have to move it once the jacaranda grows enough to throw shade onto it. I'm also planting Asian dwarf jasmine around it to further reduce my mowing tasks and reduce my need to water in drought scenarios.

I also want to get a rainbarrel set up (see how dry the lawn is in the picture). It's our dry season in the spring, right before the rainy hurricane season. To combat this problem, a friend makes and sells rainbarrels. Here's his url: http://rainwaterservices.com

As an aside, why come do Asian dwarves get a jasmine named after them anyway? Why can't I have a jasmine named after me? Norwegian dufus jasmine has serious potential and would likely be very resistant to aphids.

6-10-2008 Post-its and Electronic Receipts

I read an advertisement extolling the brilliance of the Post-it Note

Posts-its: big deal. I remember how in a more paper centric office I had used them to add notes to an underlying document, or whatever. But with the advent of email, I hardly ever use Post-its. There is only one thing I use Post-its for anymore is putting labels on stacks of binder clipped paper business receipts.

Which brings up a the question of why I am accumulating all these paper receipts in this digital age.

I looked around for some e-receipt standards which may exist. Here's what I found:

Back in 1999, a Digital Receipt Consortium was formed. http://xml.coverpages.org/dri.html It's receipt.org website is now being used for random marketing. So, either they merged or failed. In 2002, a Digital Receipt XML Schema was speced out by the Association for Retail Technology
Standards (ARTS) and IXRetail. I don't think that got anywhere, AFAICT.

And in 2002, somebody patented a mechanism: http://www.freepatentsonline.com/6487540.html

Then this blogger came up with the idea for a short-term receipt card which would hold a receipt for a month or so, then it would delete, so the card wouldn't need much storage. I sort of like the idea, but I'd rather the receipts were stored on a server without me carrying another stupid card around. I also need to keep the receipts for longer, for tax and reimbursement purposes.

And in May 2008, a company called AllEtronic is working with some big box stores to be a unified storage place for your receipts. I'm not big on this because it's a standards-less single-implementer solution which, because of that fact will not achieve pervasive adoption.

Which brings us full-circle to the need for the first bullet point's standards development solution. Don't you just love technology? Anyone interested in resurrecting the Digital Receipt Consortium?

Unlike all other Vietnamese restaurants in this area, Halong Bay actually has a stylish atmosphere with green shaded halogen track lighting highlighting large images of Halong Bay. The place was very busy, almost cafeteria-like, apparently frequented mostly by the local Vietnamese population. Being open for only a week at this point, the staff, albeit friendly and eager to help, were mostly useless. Speaking Vietnamese would likely have helped my cause when ordering. We came for the dim sum menu, but the menu is otherwise Vietnamese.

Yes, I am an antipodigastrotarian.

The dim sum was not very diverse. Generally, there were fried items filled with shrimp or pork, and steamed items filled with shrimp or pork. The steamed items were very good, the fried items were boring. There was one vegetable dish on the dim sum menu: chinese broccoli, which was very large and hard to eat without a cutting instrument and just some chopsticks. The manager jokingly encouraged me to try the chicken feet, but since this review is voluntary, I fell back upon my "no feet nor tripe" personal policy. Yes, I am an antipodigastrotarian.

We also ordered a Vietnamese basil chicken dish, which was excellent and massive in proportions, so most of it went into a to-go box. Jalapeno peppers and lots of garlic made it interesting.

Prices were reasonable, and on the cheap side for dim sum. I'll go back. Hopefully next time there will be fish in the aquarium.
